A Summer of S.T.E.A.M.With Moonlighter Makerspace

By Moonlighter Makerspace June 6, 2019

The future is filled with robots, automation, and digital realities. We don’t even know what the job titles of the future will be¦ so how do you prepare your kids for this ever evolving future? The answer is S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).

By giving them real world problems and letting them develop their own process to come up with a solution, children are empowered to be independent critical thinkers.

When they don’t know something, they learn how to find the information, develop a necessary skill to accomplish the task, or collaborate with someone who can help. Makerspaces are uniquely designed to provide a safe space for this sort of experimentation. Equipped with all sorts of materials and tools, both manual and digital, and filled with all types of resources from how-to literature to expert designers and engineers who can show you techniques for building your idea. Makerspaces are an essential resource for cultivating innovation!

Summer S.T.E.A.M. Maker Camp was developed to inspire young aspiring makers ages 7-12 and train the next generation of innovators through a series of weekly hands-on challenges. From designing architecture on Mars to experimenting with recycled materials, to creating their own superhero gadgets, they’ll be having so much fun building using real tools, 3D printers, laser cutters, and circuits to make their ideas come to life!

Kids from our programs have gone on to start their own businesses, win awards, and be commissioned to build their ideas in real life! 10-Year old Allen Hasbun built a mobile library and reading pod for the Miami Book Fair. 11-year old Eduardo Fernandez created his own business, Life Clock, recycling scrap materials from the shop and transforming them into beautiful clock faces. One Summer, a team of 50 kids helped design and build vertical farms for Smart Bites, a community urban farm and cafe. We recently partnered with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and NASA to challenge young makers to design and build their ideas for growing plants in space! The possibilities are endless when you unleash their creativity. Imagine what your child can create with the right tools and mentorship!

If you’re interested in registering your children for one of the sessions at our Wynwood Makerspace, visit the Summer S.T.E.A.M. Maker Camp page at HERE.
