The holidays indeed make the end of the year the most wonderful of all. We get to spend precious time with our loved ones, eat delicious food, and take a break from the hustle and bustle of work and school. Sometimes though, winter break with the kids may seem a little overwhelming. You want to keep them entertained, but it should be enriching, and you also want to spend some time getting that massage you’ve been craving, catch up on your favorite shows, or maybe you have to work! During times like these, finding the right activities for your children is crucial, and that’s where The Bass Museum of Art’s Winter Art Camp comes in handy.

Throughout the year, The Bass, Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, offers various educational events for adults and kids alike. From creative happy hours and curator-led talks, to family days and art classes, the opportunities for inspiration and learning at The Bass are abound. This winter, there’s still time to register for their Winter Art Camp session on January 2-4 from 9 AM - 3:30 PM. Made for children ages 4-12, this program is guided by professional museum educators, teaching artists, and certified M-DPS art teachers.

The Bass’ Winter Art Camp is split into two age groups in order to fully maximize the potential for each. Children ages 4-6 will enjoy:

  • Learning how to draw self-portraits using observational drawing methods
  • Inventing their own 3D creatures after studying critters
  • Exploring different art media with diverse materials
  • Capturing cityscapes with paint and later, turning them into 3D sculptures
  • Gaining inspiration from nature by adventuring outdoors
  • Imagining a fantasy environment, then bringing it to life on miniature scales with diorama

Children ages 7-12 will discover how to:

  • Incorporate nature as their inspiration for realistic outdoor recreations
  • Learn illustration techniques, so they can tell stories through their comic book drawings
  • Develop large-scale paintings with an underground art style after reviewing several kinds of street art and artists
  • Mix text with images to create zines based on their interests
  • Celebrate their originality by using observational drawing skills to produce self-portraits
  • Understand how posters can send mass messages to design their very own posters about something they love

More than just a regular recreational children’s camp, The Bass’ Winter Art Camp engages kids in ways unlike others. Not only will this program teach them a lot about different cultures, art styles, and artists, but it will also provide them with the encouragement to expand their imaginations and stimulate their creative noggins! Even just one day at the camp will provide your children with a new and inspired perspective on, and appreciation for, art. Along with unforgettable memories, they’ll come home with a renewed excitement for artistic activities and an eagerness to come up with innovative solutions and ideas.

Ready to sign up? You can pre-register here (which takes less than 5 minutes!) for as many camp days as you’d like, but don’t wait until it’s too late because space is limited! For The Bass Members, pricing starts at $40 per day, and $50 for non-members. And if 3:30 PM doesn’t align with your schedule, for an extra $10 per day, aftercare is available–where you can pick your children up as late as 6 PM. The Bass also has an Art Camp Scholarship Program. Find out more about how you can apply or give here. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to keep your children learning and occupied during the holiday break. Sign up now!
