By Macaroni Kid North East Miami and Miami Beach October 11, 2018

This week, in celebration of Fire Prevention Week, let’s spend some time with our kids exploring fire safety from interesting and fun angles. Here are 5 easy activities to do with the kids and learn what we should do in case of a fire.

1. Take the children to the local firehouse and introduce them to the firefightersClick here for more info on how to schedule a tour of a local fire station

2. Play Stop, Drop and Roll! Practice with your kids what to do if their clothes catch on fire by asking them to stop, drop and roll and using these instructions:

  • If you cloths catch on fire, STOP immediately, right where you are. Don’t run, it will cause the fire to grow.
  • Cover your eyes with your hands and DROP to the ground.
  • ROLL in a complete circle in one direction, and then do the same in the other direction. Then look to make sure there is no more fire.

3. This year’s Fire Prevention Week Campaign is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere”. Watch this video with your kids and learn three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire––and how to escape safely in the event of one.

4. Print here this fire safety activity sheet and complete it with your child.

5.  Talk about fire safety with your kids at home. Use these questions to spark a conversation:

  • What color is a fire truck?
  • What type of dog do firefighters have as a mascot?
  • Name a piece of equipment used by firefighters.
  • Which number must we dial in case of a fire?
  • How does the smoke detector sound like?
  • List at least two ways out of every room in our house.
  • If the second way out of your bedroom is a window, do you know how to unlock and open it?
  • Do you know where is our family’s meeting point in the event of a fire?
