By Macaroni Kid North East Miami and Miami Beach May 31, 2018

The school year is (almost) over. You might have booked the kids summer camp or you might still be planning your family summer schedule and activities. To help you and your child have an awesome summer experience, we asked our local camp experts to share with us their top tips:

“Dorf” - Jonathan Dorfberger, Associate Camp Director, MAR-JCC Camp Sol Taplin

✽ Being open to new experiences is the best way to get full enjoyment out of your summer through all of the different specialty activities that a camp offers, it open new doors and new opportunities for campers.

✽ Make sure you choose a camp that has a team of staff that are reachable through email to all of our camper families to help with any questions that arise throughout the summer. Make sure your contact information is always up-to-date.

✽ Go with a smile! The spirit in camp cultivates the friendships that will stay with our campers for life.

✽ Familiarize your kids about the fun things they will do at camp.

✽ Remind them that memories made at summer camp are memories that will last a lifetime.

✽ When discussing summer camp with your children, focus on the educational benefits.

✽ Socializing and making friends with other children is a big part of any summer camp experience. Make sure that FUN is always on the agenda in order to make your child's summer camp a memorable adventure!

✽ Many summer camp organizations realize that parents work and the camp hours are typically shorter than the work day. Be sure to ask about early-drop off and late pick-up, which is often offered for a nominal charge or even free. Also, grant funded summer camps can provide bus service. Check with the organization to see if they offer service to your neighborhood.

✽ Not all summer camps are created equal. Be sure to do your research and don't hesitate to call the organizations to get more detailed information.

✽ Discuss the options - Before any decision is made, and if the kids are big enough, talk to them, show them your options, let them know why you think they are good for them. Also, listen to what they have to say. By doing it you'll not only teach them about how to make a responsible decision, but also it can strengthen your relationship.

✽ Consider Specialized Camps - Embrace your kids’ interests and curiosities and give them the tools to convert a hobby into their passion. Consider to make this summer one full of new experiences, exposure of new things and educational at the same time.

✽ Weekly vs Monthly Camps - It happened to all of us. We see that there's a good saving if we register for the whole summer, but after a couple of weeks, you or your kid don't like it and are stuck in a non-refundable simmer camp. If you (and child) are 100% sure that's the camp they want, sure, save some bucks by registering and paying in advance for the whole summer. However, you know you and your child better than anyone. So if there's still some doubts, consider a camp that runs on a weekly registration.
