Local Mompreneur Interview: Blush Waxing Boutique owner Trista Yetsko

By Francesca Walker November 2, 2017

Trista Yetsko is the super sweet, professional and patience owner of Blush Waxing Boutique in Miami Beach where she takes care of her clients’ beauty needs. Originally from Colorado, she moved to Miami this past Summer, attracted by the the city’s international vibe, the sunny weather and the beaches. She started her new business in October 2017, after having been in Denver for 20 years, in the industry for 14 years and independent for 7 years.

In her interview Trista shares with us what it’s like being a a single mom of a 13 year old girl and a 10 year old boy and running a business, how she balances work-life and what is the best part of owning her own business.

What have been your 3 biggest professional accomplishments so far? When you do something for a company and then you go on your own it’s always scary but I would say that the biggest accomplishment was to start a business on my own. Then understanding what type of location I wanted for my business. In my case it was a bigger location - renting a bigger space was daunting because of the bigger budget but it definitely increased my volume. The third biggest accomplishment was actually making the business successful.

How do you balance work and parenting as a single mom and remain connected and available for you loved ones? Any advice for us? Achieving a work life balance is the hardest part for all of us. Some days I think it is easier without a partner and some days I think it would be way easier with a partner, you have one more person to help but then you have another person’s energy to balance throughout day and night. To get a work-life balance I suggest to commit 3 or 4 nights to have dinner with the kids all together at the same time and to make it at home for bedtime 4/5 times a week, if you can.

Have you ever had to sacrifice something at work to make the family work? I limited my availability to clients. Even when I am very busy, my hours stay strictly 9-5 because I have to pick up the kids.

What’s the best part about owning your own business? Once the business is running, the best part is that it works 9 to 5 or whatever you say the hours are. Now my clients know when to book and when not to book. I have the flexibility to have time off when I need it with kids. For example, there are 2 Saturdays a month that I want to commit to soccer and I block these 2 days. The schedule’s flexibility is worth it every second.

Please provide one business tip that you feel can really help a mompreneur with her business. After my experiences, I would say my advice is don't be hard on yourself. I know this probably sounds cliche but, whatever it takes for you, be kind to yourself along the way, buy a bunch of flower to put on your dinner table, drink a glass of wine, etc. Be calm and grounded for you personally, your kids and your partner. Be able to take your mom’s hat when you are at work. Most importantly take off your work hat when you are at home.
